Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Provide the main flavor and, once softened and chopped, body to the sauce.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel to the sauce.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the sauce and carries the onion flavor.
Bread crumbs
Absorb liquid and thicken the milk, giving the sauce body.

The step that matters

Cook slowly for 5 minutes after adding the bread crumbs. Milk scorches easily on direct heat and the starch in the crumbs needs time to swell and thicken evenly. Gentle heat and stirring prevent sticking and lumps.
