White Cake with Caramel Filling

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Cream the butter and half of the sugar together thoroughly.

  2. Add the remaining sugar to the stiffly beaten egg whites and beat well.

  3. Alternately add the flour (sifted three times with baking powder) and milk to the mixture.

  4. Fold in the egg whites last.

  5. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) until golden.
