Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish; cooking softens its fibres so it becomes tender.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the cabbage and helping keep it moist as it bakes.

The step that matters

Drain the cabbage until completely free of water. Excess water dilutes the seasoning and steams the cabbage rather than letting it soften and concentrate in flavour, so it can turn soggy.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
