Why it works: Nutmeg and flour are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 8% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 18,623 recipes. Both carry isobutyraldehyde, which smells malty, green. The science ↓

Directions
The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.
Cream the butter and gradually add the sugar.
Add the beaten eggs, milk, flour mixed with baking powder and nutmeg.
Add flour to make a stiff dough.
On a floured board, pat and roll the dough to ½-inch thickness.
Cut the dough, place on a buttered baking tin, and bake at 350°F (175°C) until light brown.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.
