What each ingredient does

Pumpkin
Forms the main body of the dish and supplies the moisture and soft texture of the purée.
Butter
Adds fat that enriches the texture and carries flavour through the pumpkin.

The step that matters

Squeeze out excess water. Pumpkin releases water as it cooks. Removing that water before mashing keeps the purée thick rather than runny, so it holds its shape when mounded on a plate.

Swap the pumpkin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Pumpkinthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
