What each ingredient does

Bread
Provides the base structure that toasting crisps and browns on the surface.
Butter
Adds richness and flavor as it softens and melts into the warm toast.

The step that matters

Spreading the softened butter without pressing heavily. Pressing hard on warm toast tears the crisp surface and crushes its airy crumb, so the butter should be spread gently.
