What each ingredient does

Loose tea
Provides the flavour and aroma that the water extracts during steeping.
Boiling water
Extracts flavour and colour from the tea leaves while carrying them into the drink.

The step that matters

Steeping for 2 minutes. Steeping too briefly leaves the tea weak and pale, while steeping too long can make it bitter and astringent, because tannins and other compounds keep leaching out of the leaves over time.
