Scalloped Tomatoes

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Wash and peel the tomatoes.

  2. Slice the tomatoes into ½ inch slices.

Layer and bake

  1. In a buttered baking dish, place a layer of breadcrumbs, followed by a layer of tomatoes.

  2. Season each layer with salt, pepper, and sugar.

  3. Continue layering until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of buttered breadcrumbs (use equal parts butter and breadcrumbs).

  4. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until heated through.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body and moisture that softens and fills the dish.
Breadcrumbs
Absorb tomato juices and form a soft, lightly crisp layered topping.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top crumbs brown in the oven.
Sugar
Balances the acidity of the tomatoes with mild sweetness.
