Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Provide the bulk and tart flavour of the filling.
Eggs
Bind the filling and help it set as it bakes.
Cream
Adds richness and moisture to the filling.
Sugar
Sweetens the filling and aids browning.
Prepared flour
Forms the pastry base and top crust that hold the filling.

The step that matters

Bake the under-crust before filling. Partly baking the pastry sets its base so it stays crisp rather than soggy under the moist, egg-rich apple filling.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (apple, egg, cream, sugar, raisin, wine, meat):

  1. Figfits better
