Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Break down when boiled and pureed to give the soup its body and thickness.
Milk or cream
Adds richness and smoothness, thinning the puree into a creamy consistency.
Dry bread
Fried until brown, it becomes crisp croutons that contrast with the smooth soup.
Salt pork
Adds savory fat and salt flavor to the broth while the potatoes cook.

The step that matters

Frying the bread until brown. Bread can burn quickly in hot lard, turning bitter. Stop when golden brown and drain well so the croutons stay crisp rather than greasy when they meet the hot soup.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, pork, milk, butter, parsley, bread, onion):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Marjoramfits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, pork, milk, butter, parsley, bread, onion. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
