What each ingredient does

Hops
Adds bitterness and aroma that balance the sweetness of the molasses.
Molasses
Provides sweetness and dark flavour, and feeds the yeast as it works.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars, producing alcohol and carbonation in the liquid.
Wintergreens
Adds a minty, aromatic flavour to the finished drink.

The step that matters

Adding the yeast. Yeast works best in warm liquid, but very hot liquid can kill it. Add the yeast only once the mixture is warm, not hot, so fermentation can start reliably.
