Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Sift the baking soda, spices, and cream of tartar into the flour.

  3. In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.

  4. Add the egg yolks and beat well.

  5. In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites until frothy and then fold them into the mixture.

  6. Add the sifted flour mixture and sweet milk, mixing until just combined.
