Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the body and acidity of the soup as they stew down.
Okra
Releases starchy mucilage that thickens the soup as it cooks.
Egg yolks
Enrich and thicken the liquid when stirred in, adding richness.
Chicken
Provides the main protein and savory meaty flavor of the soup.

The step that matters

Adding the egg mixture. Egg yolks can curdle and turn grainy if they meet a very hot liquid directly. Pouring the mixture over the chicken and into the kettle should be done gently, with the heat controlled, so the yolks thicken smoothly rather than scramble.
