What each ingredient does

Hops
Provide the bitter and aromatic flavour that characterises the beer.
Molasses
Supplies the sugar that yeast ferments, and adds sweetness and dark colour.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide, making the drink fizzy.
Wintergreen
Adds a minty, aromatic flavour to the finished beer.

The step that matters

Add the yeast when the mixture is warm, not hot. Yeast is killed by high heat, so the liquid should be only warm, like milk, before adding it. Warm liquid lets the yeast start fermenting well.
