Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide starch and body, giving the bread a moist, soft texture.
Yeast
Ferments the mixture so it becomes light and bubbly.
White sugar
Feeds the yeast and adds a touch of sweetness.
Ginger
Adds warm, spicy aroma and flavour.

The step that matters

When lukewarm, add the yeast. Yeast is alive and works best at mild warmth. If the liquid is still very hot, it can kill the yeast, and the mixture will fail to rise.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, ginger):

  1. Sweet potatofits better
  2. Carrotfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, ginger. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
