Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Whipped eggs give the drink body and a light, airy texture.
Sugar
Sweetens the drink and balances the richness of the eggs and brandy.
Whole milk
Forms the liquid base and adds richness and creaminess.
Brandy
Adds alcohol flavour and aroma to the drink.
Egg whites
Folded in whipped form to lighten the texture of the mixture.

The step that matters

Whip the whites until stiff. Egg whites hold air only when fully whipped and not deflated. Folding them gently into the mixture keeps the foam, so the eggnog stays light instead of flat.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, sugar, milk, brandy):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Gingerfits less well
  4. Clovefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, sugar, milk, brandy. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
