Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Milk
Forms the liquid base that the bread crumbs soak up and swell into a thick sauce.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the milk and thicken the sauce to a smooth, spoonable body.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the finished sauce.

The step that matters

Beat smooth with an egg whisk. Bread crumbs left lumpy after soaking will not dissolve on their own once heated. Beating while the crumbs are fully soaked breaks up clumps and gives an even, smooth texture.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, bread, onion, pepper, butter):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, bread, onion, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
