Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the meat and flavour base for the soup as it simmers.
Oysters
Add their briny flavour and tender texture when heated through at the end.
Ham
Browned in butter first, adding savoury depth to the broth.
File powder
Thickens the soup and gives it the traditional gumbo body when stirred in.

The step that matters

Adding the file powder. File powder thickens when it meets heat and can turn stringy or clumpy if boiled for long. Mixing it into a small amount of soup first, then returning it off the boil, keeps the texture smooth.
