Why it works: Fig and banana match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 2% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 104 recipes. Both carry ethyl isobutyrate, which smells fruity, ethereal. The science ↓

A General Rule for Cooking Cereals

Ingredients

Directions

Cook the cereal

  1. Boil 1 quart of water in a pot.

  2. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the boiling water.

  3. Stir in 1 cup of cereal and let it boil.

  4. Once boiling, set the pot over hot water and cook without stirring for the required time.

Add the fruit

  1. You can add raisins to the water with the salt before cooking the cereal.

  2. Remove seeds from dates, cut into quarters, and stir into the cooked cereal.

  3. Cover and return to heat to warm the fruit thoroughly.

  4. Stew prunes and figs until tender, then serve them hot or cold with the cereal.

  5. Slice bananas and serve them with the hot cereal, or cook them for better flavor.

  6. For variety, add fresh or canned fruit juice when serving.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cereal
Swells and thickens in boiling water to form the porridge body.
Salt
Seasons the water so the cooked cereal tastes less flat.

The step that matters

Cook without stirring after boiling. Once the cereal is boiling, leaving it undisturbed over gentle hot water lets the starch gelatinize evenly and avoids a lumpy, scorched texture.

Swap the raisin

The recipe marks raisin as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (dates, fig, banana):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Apricotfits better
  3. Pineapplefits better
  4. Raisinthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against dates, fig, banana. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
