Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggplant
Forms the soft, moist filling and the skin that holds it.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother, softer texture in the mashed filling.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, browned topping during baking.

The step that matters

Bake until browned. The bread crumbs brown only with enough dry heat in the oven. Underbaking leaves the topping pale and the filling wet, while overbaking can dry it out.
