Meat Fie

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the filling

  1. Mince the meat and season with onion, pepper, and salt.

  2. Cover with water and simmer until the meat is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

  3. Transfer the meat to a pie dish.

Top and bake

  1. Mash the boiled potatoes with a little butter and milk.

  2. Spread the mashed potatoes on top of the meat until the dish is full.

  3. Smooth the top with a knife and bake at 400°F (200°C) until light brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef steak
Forms the savoury, meaty filling that the pie is built around.
Boiled potatoes
Form a soft, mashed topping that becomes golden when baked.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the mashed potato topping.
Milk
Makes the mashed potato smooth and moist.

The step that matters

Smoothing and baking the potato top. The mash must be spread evenly over the filling so it bakes uniformly. Baking until light brown depends on the browning reactions that occur in the potato surface at oven heat.
