Meat Pie

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Open a tin of canned mutton or beef.

  2. Remove 1½ pounds of meat from the tin and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Season with pepper and salt.

  3. Cut ½ pound of kidneys into pieces.

  4. In a bowl, combine ¾ pound of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of salt.

  5. Rub ¼ pound of clarified dripping into the flour until no lumps remain.

  6. Add enough water to form a stiff paste, about ½ cup.

  7. Flour a board and place the paste on it.

  8. Fill a quart pie dish with the pieces of meat and kidneys.

  9. Add a little jelly from the tin to the dish for gravy.

  10. Flour a rolling pin and roll out the paste to fit the top of the pie dish, slightly larger.

  11. Cut a strip of paste about 1 inch wide from the edge.

  12. Wet the edge of the pie dish with water and place the strip of paste around the edge.

  13. Wet the strip of paste on the pie dish.
