  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours.

  3. Add onion, carrots, and celery; continue to simmer for another hour.

  2. Serve hot as a nourishing drink or use in recipes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Releases flavour and gelatin into the water, giving the broth body and savouriness.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aroma as it softens and releases its flavour into the broth.
Carrots
Contribute natural sweetness and earthy aroma to the broth.
Celery
Adds aromatic, savoury depth to the broth.

The step that matters

Keeping the simmer gentle. A rolling boil emulsifies fat into the liquid and makes the broth cloudy and greasy. A slow simmer keeps it clear and clean-tasting over the long cook.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, carrot, celery):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Turnipfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, carrot, celery. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
