Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rhubarb
Forms the body of the soup and gives its tart flavour.
Onions
Add savoury sweetness and aroma as they soften in the butter.
Consommé
Provides the liquid base of the soup.
Bread crumbs
Thicken the soup as they absorb liquid and break down while boiling.
Butter
Adds fat and richness while the vegetables stew.

The step that matters

Stew gently over low heat until tender. Rhubarb and onions can scorch or turn bitter if cooked too hot. Gentle heat softens them evenly and lets their flavours blend without sticking to the pan.
