Beef-steak, Baked

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the batter

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. In a bowl, mix milk, eggs, and flour or mashed potatoes to create a batter.

Assemble and bake

  1. Spread a little of the batter at the bottom of a baking dish.

  2. Season the beef steaks with coarse sea salt and black pepper, then place them in the dish.

  3. Pour the remaining batter over the steaks.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until cooked through.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and help it set into a firm, cohesive coating during baking.
Flour or mashed potatoes
Thicken the batter so it holds together and coats the steaks rather than running off.
Milk
Loosens the batter and adds moisture, helping it bake into a tender, set layer.
Beef steaks
Main protein; cooks through in the oven while the batter sets around it.
