Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pineapple
Provides the main fruit flavour and juice, which is drawn out by sugar standing time.
Sugar
Draws juice out of the pineapple and adds sweetness to the fruit.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and creaminess that coats the fruit and softens its acidity.

The step that matters

Standing the sugared pineapple. Letting the sugared slices stand for a few hours lets sugar draw out their juice through osmosis, softening the fruit and building a syrup. Draining afterwards keeps the salad from becoming watery under the dressing.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pineapple, sugar, grapefruit, grape):

  1. Lettucethe original
  2. Capsicumfits about as well
  3. Sweet potatofits less well
  4. Tomatofits less well
