Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Brisket of beef
Forms the main body of the dish; long simmering turns its connective tissue tender and moist.
Bread
Soaks up the seasoned cooking liquid and fat, becoming a moist base for serving.

The step that matters

Simmer gently with skimming. A rolling boil toughens meat and clouds the broth. Gentle simmering keeps the brisket tender, and skimming removes foam and excess fat so the liquid stays clear.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, bread, pepper):

  1. Tomatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Carrotthe original
  4. Potatofits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, bread, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
