Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Canned tomatoes
Provide the main body and flavor of the gelatin.
Gelatin
Sets the tomato liquid into a firm, sliceable mold when chilled.

The step that matters

Dissolving the gelatin in hot tomatoes. Gelatin must be fully dissolved in the scalded tomatoes before chilling. Undissolved granules leave gritty spots and weak patches, and the set depends on even distribution throughout the liquid.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (gelatin, pepper, lettuce):

  1. Beetrootfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against gelatin, pepper, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
