Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground beef
Forms the main body of the loaf and provides its savory flavor and fat.
Eggs
Bind the meat together so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Crackers
Absorb juices and moisture, keeping the loaf tender rather than dense.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that keeps the loaf moist and flavorful during baking.

The step that matters

Basting during the bake. Basting adds moisture to the surface of the loaf, which helps prevent it from drying out over the long oven time. Ground meat has little natural fat, so the surface can dry and toughen.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, egg, pepper, butter):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, egg, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
