Lettuce Salad

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the leaves

  1. Discard bruised and outer leaves of the lettuce, keeping the inner leaves.

  2. If necessary, wipe the inner leaves with a clean cloth; do not soak them in water.

  3. Drain the leaves on a sieve and dry them in a cloth.

  4. Tear the leaves into pieces about 1.5 inches long and place them in a salad bowl.

Dress the salad

  1. In a wooden spoon, combine ¼ teaspoon of coarse sea salt and ¼ teaspoon of finely ground white pepper.

  2. Fill the spoon with olive oil and stir well with a fork, then sprinkle over the salad.

  3. Add 2 more spoonfuls of olive oil and a little less than 1 spoonful of French vinegar.

  4. Toss the salad gently with a wooden spoon to mix the dressing.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lettuce
Forms the crisp, leafy body of the salad.
Olive oil
Carries flavour and coats the leaves, giving them a smooth, glossy texture.
French vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the oil and balances the dressing.

The step that matters

Keep the leaves dry before dressing. Water on the leaves dilutes the oil and vinegar, so the dressing slides off and pools at the bottom instead of clinging to the leaves.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lettuce, olive, vinegar):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Capersfits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. White pepperthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lettuce, olive, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
