Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rabbit
Provides the meat, which becomes tender as it bakes under the pastry.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add richness and a firm, sliced texture between the layers.
Spanish onion
Adds sweetness and savoury depth as it softens in the juices.
Tomatoes
Contribute acidity and moisture that blend into the stock.
Stock or gravy
Supplies moisture that keeps the filling from drying out while baking.

The step that matters

Parboil the rabbit joints. Parboiling after wiping partly cooks the meat so it does not stay raw or tough by the time the pie is baked through. Draining well keeps excess water from making the crust soggy.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rabbit, tomato, egg, onion, pepper, garlic):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rabbit, tomato, egg, onion, pepper, garlic. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
