Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main lean meat that forms the bulk and firm texture of the sausage.
Suet
Adds fat that melts during frying, keeping the sausages moist and rich.
Mixed spice
Adds warm aromatic flavour to the meat.

The step that matters

Fry the sausages until nicely browned. Suet melts as the sausages cook, so frying over moderate heat lets the outside brown and crisp while the inside cooks through without drying out.

Swap the shallot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Carrotfits better
  4. Shallotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
