Carrots, Boiled

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Wash and prepare the carrots. If large, halve and slice them.

Boil and serve

  1. Boil plenty of water with salt. Add the carrots and keep boiling.

  2. Cook until a fork can be easily pushed into them, about 30 minutes for young carrots and 1.5 to 2 hours for fully-grown.

  3. Serve with melted butter, placing some around the dish and the rest in a tureen.

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the main body of the dish and soften into a tender texture when boiled.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavour when melted over the cooked carrots.

The step that matters

Cook until a fork slides in easily. Carrots soften as their cell walls break down with heat, so doneness depends on size and age. Testing with a fork shows when the starches have softened enough to eat, rather than relying on a fixed time.
