Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the body of the stew and thickens as its starch cooks in the liquid.
Cabbage
Adds bulk and gentle sweetness as it softens during stewing.
Butter
Adds richness and carries flavour, and helps the rice and cabbage coat evenly.

The step that matters

Tossing without browning. Keeping the heat moderate while the mixture is tossed in butter lets the vegetables and rice soften and take on flavour without scorching. Browning would add a bitter, burnt taste and can stick to the pan.
