Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Turnips
Form the main body of the dish and become tender when cooked.
Hot fat
Browns the turnip surfaces and gives them a crisp, golden exterior.
Butter
Adds richness and fat for flavour as the turnips cook.
Onion
Adds aroma and mild sweetness when sautéed in butter.

The step that matters

Frying in hot fat. The fat must be hot enough to brown the turnip surfaces quickly. If it is too cool, the slices absorb grease and turn soggy instead of golden.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Turnipthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
