Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clams
Provide the main savory flavor and tender bite of the soup.
Milk
Forms the creamy body of the soup as the base liquid.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the broth.
Flour
Thickens the milk and broth so the soup becomes smooth and creamy.

The step that matters

Mix in the flour or crushed crackers until smooth. Flour needs to be mixed with cold milk first and stirred into the hot liquid so it disperses evenly. Added dry or in lumps, it clumps and the soup stays grainy instead of thickening smoothly.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (clam, pepper, butter, egg, milk, flour, lemon):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against clam, pepper, butter, egg, milk, flour, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
