Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Carrots
- Are the main vegetable, providing the sweet flavour and tender texture when boiled.
- Butter
- Melted over the cooked carrots, adds richness and fat for a smooth mouthfeel.
The step that matters
Boiling time by carrot age. Young and full-grown carrots need very different cooking times because larger, older roots have denser tissue that takes much longer for heat to soften. Undercooking leaves them firm in the centre, while overcooking makes them mushy.
Swap the carrot
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, cream):

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
