Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Streaky pickled pork or bacon
Adds savoury fat and smoky, salty flavour that seasons the broth as it cooks.
White cabbage
Provides the main vegetable body and sweet, mild flavour as it softens in the broth.
Bread
Soaks up the hot broth, becoming soft and thickening the soup when served.
Onions
Build the aromatic base and add sweetness as they cook down in the broth.

The step that matters

Skim off any fat. Pork and bacon release fat into the broth as they cook; leaving it in makes the soup greasy and heavy, so it should be skimmed before seasoning and serving.
