Why it works: Butter and bread are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 7% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 27,232 recipes. Both carry delta-decalactone, which smells sweet, creamy. The science ↓
Baked Mushrooms
Ingredients
Directions
The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.
Prepare
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Peel the mushrooms, rinse them to remove any grit, and cut off the ends of the stalks.
Bake
Place the mushrooms on a greased baking sheet with the stalk side up.
Add small pieces of butter on top of each mushroom and sprinkle with pepper and salt.
Cover the mushrooms with buttered paper and bake for 10 to 20 minutes until tender.
Serve
Serve the mushrooms on buttered toast, pouring the gravy over them.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Mushrooms
- Form the main body of the dish and soften into a tender, juicy filling as they bake.
- Butter
- Adds richness and moisture, helping the mushrooms cook gently and carry flavour.
The step that matters
Bake until tender. Mushrooms are mostly water. Covering them keeps steam around them so they soften evenly, while checking at the early end of the time stops them from becoming watery and shrunken.
