Why it works: Celery and parsley match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 6,810 recipes. Both carry 4'-methylacetophenone, which smells bitter almond. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Hen
- Gives the broth its body and rich, savory flavor as it simmers.
- Celery root
- Adds a mild, earthy celery flavor to the broth.
- Rice
- Adds body and thickens the soup slightly as its starch releases.
The step that matters
Skimming the foam. Foam that rises after boiling begins contains coagulated proteins and impurities. Skimming it keeps the broth clear and clean-tasting instead of cloudy or scummy.
Swap the nutmeg
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, celery, parsley, rice, pepper):
- Thymefits better
- Marjoramfits better
- Tarragonfits better
- Nutmegthe original
Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, celery, parsley, rice, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
