Stuffed Apples

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Remove a thick slice from the stem end of each apple and scoop out the pulp, leaving apple cups.

  3. In a bowl, combine the apple pulp, Maraschino cherries, and pecan nuts.

Bake and serve

  1. Place the mixture into the apple cups and add 1 teaspoon of sugar to each cup.

  2. Bake the apples until softened but not losing their shape.

  3. Remove from the oven and add 1 teaspoon of Maraschino liqueur and 1 teaspoon of Sherry to each cup.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Form the cups and soften during baking, providing the main body of the dish.
Pecan nuts
Add crunch and texture against the soft baked apple.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the apple pieces brown slightly in the oven.
Maraschino cherries
Add sweetness, chewy texture and a bright fruity flavour.

The step that matters

Bake the apples until softened but not losing their shape. Apples keep shrinking and softening as they heat, so overbaking collapses the cups and turns the flesh mushy. Check them early and remove them once tender but still holding their form.

Swap the nuts

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (apple, sugar, sherry):

  1. Chestnutfits better
  2. Almondfits better
  3. Cocoafits better
  4. Nutsthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against apple, sugar, sherry. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
