Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Gelatin
Sets the tomato liquid into a firm, sliceable jelly when chilled.
Tomatoes
Provide the main body, acidity and flavor of the jelly.
Soup stock
Adds savory depth as the liquid base of the jelly.
Sugar
Balances the acidity of the tomatoes and rounds out the flavor.

The step that matters

Dissolving the gelatin. Gelatin must be softened in cold water first, then fully dissolved into the hot tomato mixture. Undissolved granules leave gritty spots, and the jelly will not set evenly if the gelatin is not completely melted before molding.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, clove, sugar, ketchup, gelatin):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Carrotfits better
  3. Cucumberfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, clove, sugar, ketchup, gelatin. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
