Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Strawberries
Provide the flavour, colour and juice that form the base of the ice cream.
Sugar
Sweetens the mixture and softens the texture of the frozen ice cream.
Cream
Adds richness and fat, giving the frozen ice cream a smooth, creamy texture.
Whipped cream
Adds air and lightness, making the finished ice cream less dense.

The step that matters

Stir in the whipped cream when the mixture begins to set. If the base is still liquid, the whipped cream and strawberries will sink or separate. If it is frozen solid, they will not blend in evenly. Stirring at the partly set stage keeps the air and fruit evenly distributed.

Swap the strawberry

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberrythe original
  3. Raspberryfits about as well
  4. Raisinfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
