A Clam Bake

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Gather a dozen large stones and create a level floor with them.

  2. Pile driftwood on the stones and start a fire to heat the stones thoroughly.

  3. Once the stones crackle when water is sprinkled on them, brush off the embers.

  4. Place a thin layer of seaweed on the hot stones to prevent the clams from burning.

  5. Rinse the clams in salt water and pile them over the hot stones.

  6. Cover the clams with a thick layer of seaweed and a piece of canvas or dry leaves to trap steam.

  7. Bake until the shells open, checking occasionally.

  8. Serve the clams with melted butter, pepper, and vinegar.
