Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Cut off a slice from the stem end of each tomato and remove the juice and pulp with a spoon.

  3. In a bowl, combine the tomato pulp with bread crumbs and butter.

  4. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and sugar to taste.

Fill and bake

  1. Fill the tomatoes with the mixture, replace the tops, and sprinkle with buttered crumbs.

  2. Bake for about 45 minutes.

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Hollowed shells that hold the filling and soften as they bake.
Bread crumbs
Absorb tomato juice and pulp, giving the filling body so it holds its shape.
