Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Firm red tomatoes
Form the edible shell that holds the chilled filling.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and creaminess, giving the filling a smooth, rich texture.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild flavor to the filling.
Salad dressing
Adds tang and seasoning, balancing the richness of the mayonnaise.

The step that matters

Remove the seeds and pulp without breaking the skins. The skins must stay intact to hold the filling once frozen. Cutting through them lets the mixture leak out and weakens the cup's structure.

Flavor stand-ins for the onion

  2. Carrotbetter flavor fit
  3. Spinachbetter flavor fit
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, celery, pepper, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
