Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Add natural sweetness and body as they soften in the broth.
Turnips
Contribute a mild, slightly peppery flavor and a tender texture when cooked.
Celery
Adds savory aroma and a slightly firm bite to the soup.

The step that matters

Cut the carrots and turnips into even dice. Pieces of the same size cook at the same rate, so the vegetables become tender together rather than some staying firm while others turn mushy.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, celery, pepper):

  1. Parsnipfits about as well
  2. Turnipthe original
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Spinachfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against carrot, celery, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
