What each ingredient does

Ripe tomatoes
Form the main body of the dish and release juices that become the sauce as they stew.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, rounded fat flavour to the stewed tomatoes.
Grated bread
Absorbs liquid from the stewing tomatoes, thickening the sauce to a looser stew texture.
