What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and flavor, and its juices enrich the broth as it simmers.
Raw rice
Absorbs the stock as it cooks, becoming soft and thickening the dish into a creamy texture.
Chicken stock
Forms the cooking liquid that the rice absorbs, carrying flavor through the whole dish.
Tomato liquid
Adds acidity and savory depth to the broth, giving it color and tang.
Parmesan cheese
Adds salty, savory umami flavor and helps the broth turn richer as it melts in.
Mushrooms
Add earthy flavor and a tender, moist texture as they soften in the simmering liquid.

The step that matters

Adding the rice to the broth. Rice needs enough liquid and steady simmering to cook through; if the broth is too low or boils too hard, the grains can stay firm or scorch on the bottom of the pan.
