Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh lettuce
Forms the body of the salad; soaking crisps the leaves so they hold their texture.
Garlic
Adds aroma to the bowl when rubbed on its surface rather than chopped into the leaves.
French dressing
Provides acidity, sweetness and fat that coat the leaves and carry the flavour.

The step that matters

Drying the lettuce thoroughly. Water left on the leaves dilutes the dressing and makes it slide off, so the salad turns watery. Patting the leaves dry lets the dressing cling and keeps the leaves crisp.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lettuce, garlic):

  1. Capersfits better
  2. Cuminfits better
  3. Tarragonfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lettuce, garlic. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
